Who’s moving in? Adult kids, aging parents

The PulteGroup home group conducted a study of 1,000 homeowners that shows almost a third expect their grown children or aging parents to eventually move in with them. About one in seven say they already have a “boomerang kid”-an adult child who moves back home-or elderly parent living under their roof.

Time Period                            Children                     Parents
Currently                                      14%                                 15%
Expected in the future                31%                                  32%

These demographic shifts are altering the needs of home buyers, which are causing the builders to create new floor plans with this in mind.  Out are the showy and dramatic living rooms that are rarely used.  In:

  • More than one master suite to accommodate adult relatives.
  • An open family-office space off the kitchen where the kids do homework or parents pay bills online.

The focus is more on practicality rather than showy.

Do you have an adult family member living with you?  Do you expect to in the near future?
